Pétra est une ancienne cité troglodyte, capitale des Édomites puis des Nabatéens, peuples aujourd'hui disparus. Elle est située à 250 km au sud de d'Amman, la capitale de la Jordanie. Créée par les Édomites qui ont dominé la région du VIIIe au Ve siècle av. J.-C., elle est ensuite passée aux mains des Nabatéens. Selon ces derniers, elle était protégée par le dieu Duchara. Mais cela ne l'a pas empêchée de tomber aux mains des Romains en 106 de notre ère. Elle atteignit son apogée du Ier siècle av. J.-C. au Ier siècle après J.-C. Elle aurait abrité à cette époque jusqu'à 30 000 habitants. Elle a dû sa prospérité à sa position stratégique sur les routes caravanières, entre l'Arabie, la mer Rouge et la Méditerranée. De plus, elle était bien abritée dans une gorge profondément encaissée où l'eau était abondante. C'est l'ouverture des routes maritimes à l'époque romaine qui porta un coup fatal à Pétra et aux Nabatéens. Occupée par les Romains, conquise par les Arabes puis par les croisés, elle fut complètement oubliée jusqu'a sa redécouverte en 1812 par un voyageur suisse, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. On montre surtout de Pétra ses tombeaux creusés à même la roche et qui présentent des façades de type hellénistique (dont le célèbre Khazneh). The descriptions of Strabo, Pliny the Elder, and other writers identify Petra as the capital of the Nabataeans and the center of their caravan trade. Walled in by towering rocks and watered by a perennial stream, Petra not only possessed the advantages of a fortress but controlled the main commercial routes which passed through it to Gaza in the west, to Bostra and Damascus in the north, to Elath and Leuce Come on the Red Sea, and across the desert to the Persian Gulf. From the Araba, travellers approach by a track which leads round Jebel Haroun (Aaron's Mountain) and enters the plain of Petra from the south; it is just possible to find a way in from the high plateau on the north; but the most impressive entrance is from the east, down a dark and narrow gorge, in places only 10 or 12 ft. wide, called the Sik (or Siq), i.e. the shaft, a split in the huge sandstone rocks which serves as the waterway of the Wadi Musa. Near the end of the defile stands the most elaborate of the ruins, Khasneh al Faroun or "the Treasury of Pharaoh", not built but hewn out of the cliff; a little farther on, at the foot of the mountain called en-Nejr, comes the theatre, so placed as to bring the greatest number of tombs within view; and at the point where the valley opens out into the plain the site of the city is revealed with striking effect.
